We've created a video guide to set up Tanda Payroll in your account. If you'd prefer to read, continue below.
1. Enable Tanda Payroll
To get started, navigate to the Payroll tab in your account, read through terms and conditions, confirm your payment details, and click Enable Now.
💡 Note: Only account admins can enable Payroll in your account.
2. STP reporting details
Under Payroll > Payroll Settings > Reporting Details, add your business' details that are required for STP reporting, including:
ABN
Legal name
Trading name
Payer branch code
ATO contact
Address
A BMS identifier and software subscription ID will be automatically generated when you start entering details.
On this page, you can also add the details of any external tax agents that are providing payroll services for your business and confirm initial ATO reporting details.
If you pay staff out of multiple payroll files, navigate to Actions > + Add Payroll File on the same page and enter the details for this entity.
3. Company setup details
Under Payroll > Payroll Settings > Company Setup, enter the details used to create an ABA file and pay your staff.
Learn more in the full Company Setup guide.
Learn more about ABA files.
4. Earnings rates
For customers using Tanda's managed award templates, earnings rates and their relevant STP categories will automatically be created in your Payroll account.
To view the earnings rates, navigate to Payroll > Payroll Settings > Earnings Rates.
Any custom award rules or allowances that aren't part of a Tanda managed award template will also be automatically created in your account, however STP categories will need to be manually allocated.
Any earnings rates that need to be allocated will be flagged on this page. Learn more about Earnings Rates in the full guide.
5. Deductions
Common deductions can be created and later added to the relevant employees' payslips.
To start, setup your deductions under Payroll > Payroll Settings > Deduction Types.
Learn more in the full Deductions help guide.
6. Lump sums
Create lump sum types to pay varying amounts during a pay run. Common examples of lump sums include bonuses or commissions.
To create a lump sum type, navigate to Payroll > Payroll Settings > Lump Sum Types and click + New.
To learn about Paying bonuses and commissions with the Schedule 5 Tax Table specifically, see the full guide.
7. Termination types
Configure termination types for any common payment scenarios when staff finish at your business.
Two termination types are already created when you enable Payroll:
Redundancy payout
Termination in lieu of notice
Any additional termination types can be configured through Payroll > Payroll Settings > Termination Types.
Learn more about Processing an employee termination payment (ETP) in the full guide.
8. Super funds
Super funds will need to be added to your Super Fund Settings before being allocated to employee profiles. These can either be added manually by clicking the + New button, or added in bulk by using the Import/ Export menu. This will add the super funds to the employee, as well as automatically add to your Super Fund Settings.
Once these have been set up, they can be allocated to the employee's profile.
Employees have two super-related fields on their profile:
Super Fund Membership
Super Fund Contributions
The Super Fund Membership field will pull from your Super Fund Settings, and is a membership which is currently, or has previously, been allocated to an employee payslip. To ensure that a record of these past contributions are kept, Memberships cannot be deleted once they have been used.
The Super Fund Contributions are the contributions which will be automatically allocated to an employee's payslip.
By default, a Mandatory Super Contribution will be allocated, where additional contributions can be added by clicking "ADD".

9. Staff details
Ensure staff have all their payroll details on their profiles, including bank, tax, and superannuation memberships.
If you use Tanda's Employee Onboarding, this information is already collected when staff first onboard. These details will automatically populate in Payroll.
If the required information wasn't collected through Tanda, it can be added in bulk under Payroll > Staff > Actions > Bulk Update Staff.
You'll be given a list of templates with different fields that can be updated. Download the relevant template, make any changes, and re-upload the document as a .csv file. Ensure you've selected the correct Type of Data from the options in the dropdown list.
Staff can also update their details through the Tanda mobile app with Employee Self Service enabled.
10. Staff profiles
Once staff details have been entered, configure any additional payroll details.
Through Payroll > Staff > [click staff name], ensure the following fields have any necessary details for your staff:
Autopaid earnings template (generally used for salaried staff, learn more in the full guide)
Leave balances (based on leave types configured in Tanda)
Deductions (select from those configured in step 5)
Voluntary tax payments
Super fund membership (select from those configured in step 8)
Additional super fund contributions (note: the mandatory super contribution is already created when enabling Tanda Payroll)
Additional bank accounts that wages are paid to
Opening balances can also be configured on staff profiles for things like earning types, leave, or deduction balances. The information here will depend on how you choose to transition from your previous payroll system. Learn more in the Transitioning from another payroll system for STP reporting guide.
11. Leave accruals
For leave balances to accrue and pay accurately, ensure the settings for your leave types have been configured correctly in Tanda.
Configure your leave types by navigating to Payroll > Payroll Settings > Leave Types:
Click on the relevant leave type and scroll down to the Leave Rules section. Here you can set up who this will apply to using the "Award Template" field, along with the fields in the "Leave Applies to" section:
Ensure that a Pay Rate and Accrual Rate have also been entered:
An accrual rate of 0.076923 per hour will result in 4 weeks of leave accrual in a 52-week period.
If this leave type should accrue differently for different staff, add a new Leave Rule by clicking "ADD RULE" and configuring the steps above:
12. Payroll Journals
By default, your Tanda account is pre-configured with generic accounts. You can edit the name and code of these to match what you already have set in your account platform.
To do this, navigate to Payroll > Payroll Settings > Journal Setup (Accounts).
To report wages and super from different teams or locations to separate payroll accounts, you can set up team-specific accounts.
Learn more in the payroll journals help guide.
13. Authorise the connection with the ATO's Access Manager
Before you can submit your first pay run via Single Touch Payroll, you'll need to have authorised the connection between Tanda and the ATO, for each of your payroll files.
Learn how to enable the integration here.
